04 Beginner Tips

New to 7 Days to Die? Read these before your first horde night.

01
Day 1 priority: shelter. Find a building, reinforce the doors, block the windows. You need a roof over your head before nightfall. Don't build from scratch on day 1 — occupy and fortify.
02
Punch trees, make a stone axe. Your first tool should be a stone axe (small rock + wood + plant fiber). It chops wood, mines stone, and kills zombies. The multi-tool of the apocalypse.
03
Read every skill magazine and book you find. With 300% XP active, reading + doing = fast level ups. Check every bookshelf, desk, and mailbox.
04
Upgrade your blocks. Wood frames → wood → cobblestone → concrete → steel. Each tier is dramatically stronger. Don't face a horde with wood walls.
05
Get a land claim block ASAP. Place it in your base to activate the 32x block durability bonus. Without it, your walls are paper during Blood Moon.
06
Horde night = stay in your base. Don't run. Don't drive. Don't explore. Sit in your base with ammo and fight. Running attracts more and they will chase you forever.
07
Zombies dig. If you hide underground or on a roof, they'll dig straight down or up to reach you. Build kill corridors and funnels, not bunkers.
08
Use the trader. Traders are marked on the map. They sell weapons, ammo, tools, and give quests for XP and loot. Visit one early — the starter quests alone are worth the trip.
09
Cook food, don't eat it raw. Raw meat gives food poisoning. Campfire + cooking pot = safe meals. Boiled water > murky water. Dysentery kills as fast as zombies.
10
Airdrops land at the smoke. Look for the supply plane sound and the orange smoke trail. Mark it on your map, gear up, and go claim it. Other players might be heading there too — get there first.
